I am exploring the idea of an English language theatre group in Perugia. The repertoire would extend to British, Australian and American theatre.
My germ of a plan is to pitch the idea with the public reading of a play, “Jurassica”, which premiered in Australia 3 years ago to very good reviews, of an Italian migrant family, a universal story of migration and assimilation (and nothing to do with “Jurassic Park”!). My first thoughts about a first season would be to select a play around the broad theme of family from each of these three countries for performance.
There are two English language theatres in Rome and one in Florence. I believe there is a demand for the English spoken word here and English literature is taught at L’Universita’ degli Studi di Perugia.
These are first thoughts. I need to do some further networking around the theatre community here before I embark on this, but I’d be interested to hear the responses of members of this group.
My engagement in theatre occurred after for health reasons having to “retire” early. I have some experience in community theatre, as an extra, some TV ads, a two episode dramatisation in “Australian Story” on the ABC, and a 14 months’ paid gig as a judge in a courtroom drama before coming to Italy. While I haven’t had formal training, I had extensive workshops with some of the top Australian stage writers and directors since 2005.
